Americans see the big picture - this is well known - and for Christmas they are no exception to the rule! Where we simply decorate a Christmas tree by hanging a few balls and one or two light chains, our friends across the Atlantic are transforming homes and gardens into veritable dream factories, as evidenced by the photos below!
The Christmas lights are of course visible in Manhattan (street decorations, animated department store windows, ephemeral markets ...), but it is in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood, Cobble Hill Dyker Heights and especially the magic of Christmas decorations comes into its own! That's why New York in French proposes to take you by mini-bus to the discovery of these neighborhoods in Brooklyn (places little or no accessible by subway).
Several stops are planned to make walking and enjoying the outdoor decorations, folklore and magical atmosphere of this special time of year. A family visits if any, that will be at night, as you can imagine!
Welcome to Queens – a most diverse place on the planet! Queens is the largest of NYC’s boroughs, and it’s the most diverse. Half of the population is foreign born! Delve into Queens with an excursion through Long Island City – one of NYC’s hottest new neighborhoods. In recent years this rapidly-growing district has been revealed as a blooming gem. A transformation is deep underway, and it’s astonishing: a vast forgotten industrial zone being revitalized from the ground up - turning into a top place to live, work and play. Old factories and infrastructure are now giving way to parks, hi-rise towers and cultural institutions. This Queens neighborhood is the #1 place of construction in New York City.
Experience Long Island City’s unique vibe on a walkthrough of the neighborhood. Feel the scale of the infrastructure that defines western Queens – a maze of tracks, bridges and trains. Then see raw industry transition into sleek modern housing. Check out established and newly budding cultural institutions. Stroll through one of the NYC’s top urban parks, and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of Midtown Manhattan. Plus discover a secret, unexpected urban oasis!
Take this all in while learning about the area’s history (a tale of boom-and-bust industry); and the extent of its current urban renewal. Can you guess which common supermarket product has left an indelible impact on the revitalized waterfront? By the end of this tour you will have experienced a unique off-the-beaten-track district just minutes from Manhattan; and you will have discovered why Queens is quickly and quietly becoming the new cool!
See some of the best stencil art, throw ups, mural art, hall of fames, paste ups, ad busting, heaven spots, burners, installations etc., while learning who is behind the art and what their motivations are. Discuss street art vs graffiti and the unwritten rules and codes of conduct. The art changes rapidly in the streets so there is always fresh work and you might even get the chance to see an artist doing a piece live.
Learn the mythical language, history, and origins of this underground global phenomenon. It’s no secret that New York is known for its substantial art history. But, did you know that the early hip hop community was responsible for much of the underground art that had taken over the Urban Landscape of New York City?
Our Writing’s On the Wall Walking Tour of New York will take you around to see some of the best examples of street art, graffiti, and mural art in the city.
This is New York’s funniest and most insightful tour to the Statue of Liberty, giving you to the stories, rumors, and legends that you won’t hear anywhere else. Want to know about the other tragedy on the day of JFK’s assassination (the one that involved a giant octopus)? Or what our guides ‘affectionately’ call Lady Liberty behind her back? Then this is your tour.
You’ll meet at Battery Park, home to a beer garden/immigration station, as well as a graphic plaque given to the city of New York by the Dutch to remind us that they stole Manhattan first.
With a small group of 25 people or fewer and an expert local guide (carefully vetted for his/her sense of fun) you’ll board the ferry to Liberty Island.
During the crossing they will regale you with some of the more outlandish stories of Lower Manhattan. First and foremost is the tale of a ferry sinking that killed 400. In the wreckage authorities found the markings of what looked like huge suction cups on the side of the boat, pointing to an unlikely culprit. Is this the twisted story NY’s port authorities are hiding from you or is it a complete fabrication? The photographic evidence held by your guide is pretty convincing...
When you reach Liberty Island you’ll have special access to climb up to the Statue pedestal, via a stairway (or elevator) inside the structure. Climb under the skirts of Lady Liberty to marvel at her cavernous interior and hear the story of how she was made. Naturally, this won’t be the polite version from the history books. Instead you’ll learn how here creator was a little dramatic and didn’t always love Americans; how many Americans cared even less for his statue and weren’t interested in paying for the pedestal that you’re standing on (which eventually cost more than the statue itself); how her torch started out as little more than a flicker of light; and how many birds lost their lives because of it. You’ll also learn how the statue went from being little known and less cared for, to an icon of the American people, used to advertise everything from immigration and patriotism, to laxatives and cocaine.
After enjoying this eye-opening, hilarious, and eventually inspirational story, you’ll step outside for views from the pedestal that reach over the harbor and encompass much of Lower Manhattan - the perfect selfie spot.
Your guided tour ends here but your day doesn’t have to. With all-inclusive tickets valid for the rest of the day, you can take the ferry on to Ellis Island to explore the lovely museum by yourself and get even more information about the history of this hallowed stretch of harbor. The museum here is so well-curated, with videos, audio and huge photographic exhibits; you won’t need your guide at all.
