Today, you’ll turn the tempo down with a glimpse into the laid-back lifestyle of a typical Turkish village. In the mountain village of Bayir, donkeys stand in place of cars, and the locals swear by a giant tree in the main square – walking around it 3 times is said to bring good luck. Little communities like this still make a living in old-fashioned ways, like hand-producing honey and weaving carpets. You’ll stop by a comparatively modern museum, which is dedicated to honey-making and built in a honeycomb shape. And you’ll visit a shop where you can haggle for handmade carpets. Another village on our route is Turgut, where you’ll peep into a mosque, a school, and a traditional house. After lunch, we’ll shortcut past a pretty waterfall before making our last stop in the sleepy coastal settlement of Hisarönu – not to be confused with the neon-lit party town of the same name.

Swim stops pepper the day, giving the whole family a closer look at the ancient frankincense forests of Boynuzbükü and hilly Zeytin. Tersane is the biggest of the islands – its ink spill shape offers a skinny islet with millpond-still waters. This voyage also squeezes in a couple of refuelling stops, including lunch and a coffee break.

A winding river, mud baths and a sea turtle sanctuary – this is the ultimate Dalyan tour. First on the to-do list is a boat cruise. The Dalyan River is a long, lazy stretch of reed beds, ancient tombs and teal-blue waters. You could even spy turtles as you drift by the sand bank nicknamed Turtle Beach. Part of the riverbank also doubles as a mud bath packed with minerals. It’s something of a celebrity haunt – Sting, Dustin Hoffman and David Bowie have all been spotted here. After lunch, we’ll head to the centre of Dalyan, where you’ll get an hour to explore a bazaar. It’s a traditional set-up, so expect heaps of fruit and vegetables and stalls hung with patterned crockery. Ituzu Beach is the last stop. On this long, sandy stretch, we’ll drop by a turtle sanctuary that rescues and treats injured turtles. The trip is finished off with free time for swimming or wandering the mountain-backed beach.

This tour shows off the Saklikent Gorge. It’s a monster – the second-largest gorge in Europe and the longest and deepest in Turkey. First, though, we’ll swing by nearby ancient Tlos. It was once one of the most powerful Lycian cities in the Mediterranean, and its acropolis, tombs and houses still cling to the edge of the valley. Pomegranate trees and vines decorate the whole place, and it’s all backed by sweeping valley views. After lunch, we’ll head out on a trek along the gorge itself. It’s a two-hour walk, and you’ll wander waterside walkways, peer over bridges and paddle through the shallow river bubbling through the gorge. Dramatic scenery guaranteed.

The 12 Islands Cruise is one of the most popular trips in Turkey, showcasing the islands of postcard-pretty Fethiye Bay. Swim stops pepper the day, giving you a closer look at the ancient frankincense trees of Boynuzbükü and hilly Zeytin. Tersane is the biggest of the islands – its ink spill shape offers a skinny islet with millpond-still waters. Back in Ottoman times, this place was a port famous for its shipbuilding, but nowadays the hills are scattered with sun bleached ruins. This voyage also squeezes in a couple of refuelling stops, including lunch and a coffee break.

Rumour has it Cleopatra used to be a regular at the Dalyan Mudbaths. And on this half-day trip, you’ll see that they’ve only got more popular with age. It’s the healing properties that puts them on the region’s must-see list – the mud is supposed to completely revamp your skin. There’s a method to the madness, too. First, spend some time wallowing in the mud pool. Once you’re plastered in mud from top to toe, kick back and relax in the sun. It’s the drying mud that’s said to double as a super-strength de-aging mask. After showering off, you can have a dip in the natural sulphur pool, where the temperature hits a cosy 40°C.

Winding its way to the sea from Köycegiz Lake, the Dalyan River is home to freshwater turtles. And the nearer it gets to Iztuzu beach, its waters also sometimes play host to rare Caretta-carretta, or loggerhead, turtles. With a little luck on this trip, you’ll get to see both species of these graceful creatures. Leaving early morning, your boat will waft along the river, floating by reedbeds towards Iztuzu and the coast. Keep your eyes peeled for the river turtles along the way. They often swim up to boats looking for food and the clear waters make it easy to see them. And as you reach Iztuzu beach, you might glimpse some of the prized Caretta-carrettas that nest on its protected sands. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so have your camera handy. After your turtle watching, you’ll visit a turtle rescue centre, before returning to your hotel.

Sample a different country with a day trip to Rhodes. With its sandy beaches, whitewashed villages and rich history, it’s Greece at its best. After we’ve dropped you at Fethiye harbour, you’ll ride a hydrofoil to Rhodes Town, the capital, where the time is yours to do as you wish. With its picturesque harbour, new town and walled old quarter built by the Knights of St. John, it’s packed with attractions. Gaze at the well-preserved medieval architecture of the old town. Sights to tick through include the Street of the Knights, gigantic Palace of the Grand Masters and 15th century Hospital of the Knights. Then once you’re done with history, explore the cobbled passageways - they’re filled with fountains, churches and shops selling local handicrafts and Greek delicacies. Or head for the new town’s pavement cafes and chic boutiques. And don’t miss Mandraki harbour.

Ortaca is a typical Turkish working town – and it’s got a big, lively market to prove it. This trip heads out on a Friday, when the whole town perks up for this weekly bazaar. On the drive in, you’ll roll past farming fields, pomegranate trees and citrus fruit orchards – the spoils of which go straight to these market stalls. Join the locals and have a go at haggling for everything from jewellery and patterned skirts to cooking tagines and handmade crafts.

You’ll start the day in Turkish style on this half-day tour. First up is breakfast – a traditional pick ‘n’ mix of farm-fresh vegetables, olives, cheese, eggs and freshly-baked bread. Börek tops off the feast. These feta-packed pastries have been on Ottoman breakfast menus for centuries. In true Turkish tradition, the breakfast will wind down with a pot of Turkish black tea – and the server will show you how to make the perfect brew. If you prefer, you can opt for a sweet Turkish coffee. A long, lazy breakfast wouldn’t be complete without a newspaper to leaf through, so you’ll be offered a selection of British weeklies, too. On the way back to the hotel, there’s a bonus stop at a mosque, where you’ll have a chance to check out its decorated domes and sky-scraping towers.

The Secret Valley – AKA Akkaya Valley – is Turkey at its most idyllic. The countryside is a peaceful swathe of olive groves, meadows and jewel-blue rivers. The tour itself kicks off from the river that winds its way through the valley’s spine of forest-clocked mountains. At a postcard-pretty harbour, you’ll hop on board a boat and sail off through the canyon. It’s dramatic views all the way around here. After half an hour or so, the boat weighs anchor at a petite sandy beach. Here, you’ll have plenty of time to eat lunch and explore the riverside and forest trails. On the boat journey back, you’ll get a second chance to drink in the dramatic valley views.
