Porto Santo might be tiny, but it certainly packs a lot into its 42 square kilometres. This island tour kicks off with a coach journey to the pretty port town of Calheta. The beach here is one of the best in Porto Santo, and you can check out the striking rock formations that peek out of the water. Next, you’ll get a snapshot of everyday local life as you drive through the little villages of Ponta, Campo de Baixo, Campo de Cima and Lombas. Then, it’s on to the Pico Castelo, a mountain that soars 437 metres above ground level. Originally used as a
Porto Santo is known for its unspoiled good looks, and you’ll take in all the scenery on this half-day walking tour. You’ll set off on a rural path that leads up to Pico Branco – the second-highest mountain on the island. Following the path up the mountain, you can look out over the whole of Porto Santo, checking out the surrounding flora and cypress trees on your way. This part of the island is also a haven for sea birds, so keep an eye out – the cory’s shearwater and the common tern are among its residents. From here, you’ll head to a second peak, Terra Cha, where you’ll visit a stone house. This place will introduce you to the island’s plant life, and you can take a look at some varieties that are being re-introduced as part of a new scientific project. Plants aside, the house itself is something of a star attraction. Underneath the building, y
Pico do Castelo is the only green mountain on Porto Santo, thanks to the re-forestation scheme that started here way back in 1912. On this half-day tour, you’ll climb the mighty peak to get up close to some of the island’s plants and wildlife. You’ll set off in the morning, making a climb that’ll see you reach 437 metres above ground level. On the way, keep an eye out for the different types of trees in this region – dragon, heather, juniper and lebanon cedar are just a few of the varieties you’ll find. This place is a hotspot for birds, too. You’ll pass by an old fortress on your way to the top – the ruins of which hint at the island’s pirate-dodging past. All that aside, the climb is worth it for the views alone – Pico do Castelo offers up a panoramic vista of the island from its summit.
Make sure you pack your camera and a pair of walking shoes for this easy half-day hike – it shows off some of the best views in Madeira. With an expert guide leading the way, you’ll discover one of the most beautiful parts of the Serra de Agua parish. The walk traces a small part of a 65-kilometre levada. Over 2,000 kilometres of these aqueducts and water channels web Madeira, delivering much-needed water to the dry south-west of the island. They also double up as scenic walking trails fringed with unusual flora and fauna. From the area’s hilly heights, you’ll catch sight of Madeira’s rugged south coast, the Encumeada pass, and the little town of Ribeira Brava. The quick-changing clouds are almost as distracting as the views as they tumble their way down the valley slopes.
Porto Santo is known for its natural beauty, and its coastline is one of the best in Europe. The waters are clear and blue, and the pale sands stretch unbroken for nine kilometres. A great way of taking it all in is by yacht, and that’s exactly what’s in store on this aftrenoon trip. Soak up the sunshine with a drink, before stopping for a swim to cool off. There’ll be a break for some snorkelling, as well. And, don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife along the coast. It’s not uncommon to spot dolphins and whales in these parts.
