Pico do Castelo is the only green mountain on Porto Santo, thanks to the re-forestation scheme that started here way back in 1912. On this half-day tour, you’ll climb the mighty peak to get up close to some of the island’s plants and wildlife. You’ll set off in the morning, making a climb that’ll see you reach 437 metres above ground level. On the way, keep an eye out for the different types of trees in this region – dragon, heather, juniper and lebanon cedar are just a few of the varieties you’ll find. This place is a hotspot for birds, too. You’ll pass by an old fortress on your way to the top – the ruins of which hint at the island’s pirate-dodging past. All that aside, the climb is worth it for the views alone – Pico do Castelo offers up a panoramic vista of the island from its summit.
