Make sure you pack your camera and a pair of walking shoes for this easy half-day hike – it shows off some of the best views in Madeira. With an expert guide leading the way, you’ll discover one of the most beautiful parts of the Serra de Agua parish. The walk traces a small part of a 65-kilometre levada. Over 2,000 kilometres of these aqueducts and water channels web Madeira, delivering much-needed water to the dry south-west of the island. They also double up as scenic walking trails fringed with unusual flora and fauna. From the area’s hilly heights, you’ll catch sight of Madeira’s rugged south coast, the Encumeada pass, and the little town of Ribeira Brava. The quick-changing clouds are almost as distracting as the views as they tumble their way down the valley slopes.
