If you feel like you’re overdue a lazy day, this cruise could be just what the doctor ordered. Meet us at Porto Santo’s marina, and we’ll help you onboard a catamaran for an afternoon at sea. You’ll sail along the south coast, passing by the good-looking beaches that’ve helped this island stake a claim on the tourist map. Later, the captain will drop anchor so you can take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean. If you’d rather stay dry, you can top up your tan on the deck. You’ll be on the waves for about three hours before making your way back to dry land, so you’ll have plenty of time to relax.
Say ‘Madeira’ and fortified wine might spring to mind, but that’s not the island’s only delicacy. This tour for foodies starts at the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint, where you’ll discover why many call Madeira ‘the floating garden in the Atlantic’. Its hilltop spot opens up views of Funchal Bay and the Desertas Islands. Next, you’ll head inland to Eira do Serrado. After taking in the views over the mountains and Nun’s Valley, you’ll spend time in the secluded village of Curral das Freiras. Nuns used to hide here when pirates attacked in the 16th century. You’ll sample honey cake and locally-produced liqueurs – made from surrounding chestnut trees. Later, you’ll stop in the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, which charmed Sir Winston Churchill in the 1950s. Here, you can sip on the local tipple, Poncha – made from lemon juice, honey and sugar-cane liqueur. On the way back, you’ll tick off Madei
Today, you’ll hop into the back of a tuk-tuk for a tour around the island. These vehicles are the best way to explore Porto Santo – they’re small enough to zip around the narrow lanes and, because they’re powered by electricity, they’re also eco-friendly. The route takes you past the town squares and whitewashed buildings in Vila Baleira, Porto Santo’s only town. There’ll also be photo stops at some of the island’s lookout points, which give you cinematic views of Porto Santo’s landscape and the islets just off its coast. Other highlights include the tiger-striped cliffs of Serra de Fora, a traditional village in the craggy north called Camacha, and the sand dunes of Praia da Calheta on the southwest tip of the island.
Stand-up paddleboarding is a great way to hit the waves without having to master the expertise of surfing. And Porto Santo is renowned in the watersports world, thanks to its Atlantic Ocean swells. Today, you’ll be paired with an expert instructor, who’ll teach you the ropes before you push your board out onto the sea. What’s more, you’ll work with your tutor to set some personal goals, to get the most out of your paddlesurfing experience. You’ll be provided with all the gear you need, and your lesson will last about two and a half hours.
Because of its location away from mainland Europe in the North Atlantic Ocean, Porto Santo’s coasts are made for water and windsports. And kitesurfing bridges the gap between the two. On this trip, you’ll be introduced to the extreme sport, which involves standing on a board that’s propelled through the waves thanks to a kite attached to it. A professional tutor will be on hand to help you get to grips with all your gear, before you take to the waves. In the right conditions, you may even be able to catch some air-time.
Today, you’ll have a go at windsurfing, a watersport that combines the techniques of sailing and surfing. And you’re best-placed to be introduced to the sport, too – Porto Santo has been called Europe’s best-kept surfing secret, thanks to the excellent conditions off the island’s coasts. Your day will be headed up by an expert instructor, and it’ll be split into stages. You’ll start by covering off the theory, then you’ll be led down into the shallows to put your new-found skills to the test.
