Choose 2 of these 3 plantations to visit on the Great River Road that winds along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The combination choices are: Whitney/Laura, Whitney/Oak Alley, or Laura/Oak Alley.
WHITNEY: In 2014, the Whitney Plantation opened its doors to the public for the first time in its 262 year history as the only plantation museum in Louisiana with a focus on slavery. Through museum exhibits, memorial artwork, restored buildings and hundreds of first-person slave narratives, visitors to Whitney will gain a unique perspective on the enslaved people who lived and worked here. The Big House is one of the finest surviving examples of Spanish Creole architecture and one of the earliest raised Creole cottages in Louisiana. As a site of memory and consciousness, the Whitney Plantation Museum is meant to pay homage to all slaves on the plantation itself and to all of those who lived elsewhere in the United States.
LAURA: Travel back in time to Laura Plantation, an operating sugar farm built in 1805, on what has been called “the best history tour in the U.S.” You'll have the chance to visit 11 historic buildings on the National Register, including slave cabins in which the West-African folktales of Compair Lapin (later known as Br’er Rabbit) were recorded over 140 years ago. Laura Plantation was awarded the “Top Travel Attraction in Louisiana” by the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association in 2007. It was also listed among “the top 25 most popular house museums in the U.S.” by the American Academy of Architecture and Design.
OAK ALLEY: Feel the gentle breeze of Southern hospitality on a tour that takes you back to the glory of the Old South! You'll experience a bygone era in one of the South’s most beautiful settings-Oak Alley Plantation, built in 1839. Marvel at the unbelievable quarter-mile long alley of 28 magnificent Oak trees, each over 250 years old, and view the Majestic Cypress Trees in Louisiana’s swamps bordering the Mississippi River. Your guided tour will reveal the fascinating stories of the home and its history. Perhaps the most photographed plantation ever, Oak Alley has been the setting for such motion pictures as Interview with a Vampire, Primary Colors, and the wedding of Bo and Hope from the daytime soap opera, Days of our Lives.
We chose only the most unique plantations to visit. On this tour, guests will see the grandeur and diversity of New Orleans by visiting not one but two sites - Oak Alley and Laura Plantation. Each home is a historic landmark in itself. By visiting two sugar cane plantations which survived the civil war, guests will step back in time to get a glimpse of privileged southern living in the 1800's.
Spend the day along the old Mississippi River Road, visiting Louisiana’s most famous plantations. With Cajun Encounters you will journey down the historic River Road Region as you make your way to these historic landmarks. On this tour, you will see the grandeur and diversity of New Orleans by visiting Oak Alley Plantation and Laura: A Creole Plantation.
Laura: A Creole Plantation, has a rich and unique history, from the home itself to the stories of the four women that ran it, one of which it was named for. Tour this 200+ year old sugarcane plantation. Tour includes a walkthrough of the “Big House” as well as slave quarters. Initially the Plantation was built and run by a French Creole family, the DuParcs, and later turned over to a German family, the Waguespacks, who ran it for nearly 95 years. The West African influences however highlight the history of this plantation. The “Tales of Br’er Rabbit” were based on stories told by the West African freedmen working on the plantation around 1870, to Alcée Fortier, a friend and neighbor of the family. These stories were variations of traditional stories told in their homeland, Senegal, and interpreted by the African slaves and freedmen of the plantation to their children.
Oak Alley Plantation gets its name from the spectacular quarter mile tunnel of 28 oak trees that frame the plantation as you approach. Built in 1839 and facing the Mississippi River, Oak Alley’s magnificent appearance makes it a MUST SEE destination on everyone’s list of historic Louisiana sites. This plantation was originally named Bon Séjour (pleasant sojourn), but became known as Oak Alley when riverboat passengers floating by marveled at the double row of giant live oak trees leading to the plantation. The plantation is a Greek revival style mansion with the striking feature of free standing Doric columns surrounding the entire mansion.
The adventure begins when you are picked up from your hotel either in the Downtown area or in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. The van drivers provide insight to the city and give first hand experiences of Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath on your 45 minute to 1 hour drive out of the city.
Keep your eyes peeled for alligators, herons, egrets, deer, feral hogs, nutria, raccoons, otters, turtles and frogs along the banks and the in the murky waters, or look up and out for bald eagles, owls, osprey, and other water fowl soaring through the skies. They'll be there one second and gone the next.
