Modern mixed with historic, skyscrapers next to parks, trendy yet deep rooted; Boston is a city full of architectural contrasts and contradictions that bring the senses to life. This tour takes you through Boston’s history through the eye of its architecture, peeling back the layers of time that stand testament to a rich past, otherwise hidden behind the dazzling city buildings.

Boston is home to one of the most expensive and ambitious highway projects in the U.S., the Big Dig, which brought the city’s historic centre back into the fresh air and is where our journey through Boston’s history begins and focuses. The historic dig lasted nearly twenty years and as a result dramatically transformed Boston’s skyline, in turn creating one of the best urban parks in the country and forcing the unsightly traffic underground. With your expert architectural historian on hand, in three hours you’ll discover the hidden faces of Boston tracing its history from the 17th century to the present. Discover the haphazard 17th century streets and ornate Victorian houses, to cosmopolitan streets and fashionable squares that sit side by side in Boston’s neighbourhoods. Each neighbourhood, building and street that we walk passed on the tour holds a key that opens up the city’s history, and you’ll see how their differing style and tone set the scene for our architectural walk. Your guide will point out hidden and overlooked details of the city’s buildings, allowing you to read its history and look behind the facade into the real Boston.

HIGHLIGHTS:

*Become a Boston history buff by the end of the tour!

The ‘brahmins’ of Boston lived through several decades of economic and social upheaval leading up to the Civil War, and with this walking seminar we’ll delve into their world and discover how they redefined the city and set the tone for the rest of America during this period.

We´ll begin our education at one of the oldest churches in Boston, Old South Meeting House where the Boston Tea Party was planned, where we’ll introduce you to the social and political developments at the turn of the 19th century. Take a look at the Irish Famine memorial here and continue with a visit to the Boston Atheneum, the city’s most prestigious membership library. Our walk will take us into the heart of Beacon Hill to visit main landmarks such as the Boston Common and State House while discussing architecture and town planning. We'll stop by the African Meeting House and Shaw Memorial to discuss the key role that Abolitionism played in Boston as well as taking a closer look at Jewish history. We'll wind up in the Boston Common, the central landscape of Boston and a perfect location to conclude our discussion on this city, its inhabitants, and their crucial role in American history.

Discover the history behind Boston’s oldest neighbourhood with a local historian.

HIGHLIGHTS:

*Discover the role that Boston played in American history
*Guided walking tour with a local historian

One of Boston’s oldest neighbourhoods, the North End epitomises the history that shaped the city and America. With a local historian you’ll discover the streets and buildings that tell the story of political revolution and social innovation in a three hour walking tour around the neighbourhood. See first-hand how Boston evolved from the 17th to the 21st century and be amazed by the turbulent history that is hidden behind the bricks and cobbles.

Wind your way through a maze of colonial-era streets, led by your expert guide, and see how the neighbourhood played a major role in the historical themes that shaped America, including commerce, political revolution, social innovation and waves of immigration. Known as ‘little Italy’today, the neighbourhood is characterised by Italian restaurants and its Italian-American population that lay testament to its role in immigration history. Settled during the 1600’s, North End has its fair share of historical buildings to admire, such as the distinctive Paul Revere House, home to the revolutionary war patriot, and Old North Church with the oldest set of ringing bells. You’ll also discover how the neighbourhood played a part during the Siege of Boston, during the lead up to the American Revolutionary War, and explore the back alleys and side streets with your guide to see the lesser-known parts of town. As the tour progresses, a portrait of Boston’s evolution from the 17th to the 21st century will be painted before your eyes.

There is so much to do in historic Salem, Massachusetts, you’ll be thankful our fast ferry will get you there quickly so you can spend more time taking in all the incredible activities the city offers. Hop aboard at Boston’s Long Wharf, and in less than an hour you’ll be sightseeing, museum hopping, sampling the specialties of local chefs and shopping in Salem’s many quaint boutiques and quirky shops.

Many people, not only here in the U.S., but around the world, are familiar with the stories that surround the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. And there’s much to see and do related to the trials throughout the city.

What many folks may not realize is Salem’s history as a cultural and economic epicenter. At one point during the mid-1800s Salem was considered one of the richest cities in the world. Its port was a hotspot for trade, especially with the Far East.

This trade made many a captain and merchant rich, allowing them to build beautiful homes you can tour today that are considered outstanding examples of Colonial Revival, Federal Era and Victorian styles of architecture.

It also resulted in the city evolving and growing its love of art, culture and literature. Anyone who shares this passion should not miss an opportunity to visit the world-renowned Peabody Essex Museum.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s House of the Seven Gables was not only written here, but stands to this day as a testament to the man who was once the nation’s most famous author.
