This trips includes 3 Cyprus must-dos. You'll visit the Kolossi Castle, discover the 2000-year-old amphitheatre and ruins at Curium, and sample some of the region's wines. You'll also learn how to make traditional olive pie.
The market town of Morphou sits just over the border on the northwest coast of Cyprus. The area's known for its scenery and fruit production - more than half of Cyprus’s citrus fruits are grown here. One of the highlight on this excursion is a visit the former monastery of St Mamas, which combines Byzantine and Gothic architecture. You'll hear why St Mamas is popularly known as the patron saint of tax avoiders - it's a very interesting story. Lunch and all entrance fees are included.
This new excursion takes you to some of the lesser-known sights on Cyprus. You'll travel by minibus to the small village of Kalopanayiotis on the northern slopes of the Troodos Mountain Range. It's known for its thermal springs. The Romans, Byzantines and Franks all came here, drawn by the springs supposed healing properties. You'll then head to Foini for lunch, before calling in at a pottery and also a herb shop, where you can sample some herbal tea.
Cyprus offers up some fascinating history and this day trip is great for taking it all in. After visiting the 2,000-year-old temple of Apollo, next stop is the Petra tou Romiou, an off-shore rock where – according to mythology – the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, rose from the waves. After a quick photo, you’ll head to the UNESCO-rated Tombs of the Kings, and then on to Paphos. The old town is full of tradition and history with cobbled streets and independent cafés, while the modern harbour is brimming with bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy a spot of lunch. In the afternoon, it’s on to the Roman mosaics at the Villa of Dionysos. And last but not least, we’ll take you to the ancient village of Yeroskipos. It’s not just known for its medieval monuments, but also a sweet and tasty treat that you’ll probably know as Turkish delight.
Make sure to bring your appetite for this adults-only day out – you certainly won’t go hungry. Heading inland to mingle with the locals on this full-day trip, you’ll discover the true meaning of the Cypriot saying ‘kopiaste’ or ‘come join us’. The first stop is Palaichori, where you can refuel with some coffee while breathing in the mountain air. Next, it’s on to Agros to sample the homemade Cypriot sweets and learn about rosewater production at the rose and sweet factory. You’ll also get the chance to tuck into some local smoked meats. Lunch is another homemade affair, served in the village of Pelendri. And the afternoon is spent tasting Cypriot wine as you take in the view over the valley. Make sure to bring your camera along for the ride as mountains, valleys, olive groves and almond trees are just some of the scenic highlights.
Stroll the famous walled city and visit the old market place in the last divided capital in Europe, all at your own pace. We’ll drop you off near Ledra Street, where you’ll have the day to explore the boutiques, coffee shops and cafes. Spend some time taking in the lively city atmosphere, before crossing the border to the northern half of the city. You’ll soon realise why Nicosia is such a hub of old and new. The unchanged Turkish northern half is just as charming as the modern Greek southern half, well worth getting your passport out for. The contrasts don’t stop there, as you’ll spot what looks like a Gothic church and traditional Mosque in one. That’s exactly what the Selimiye Mosque – originally known as the cathedral of Ayia Sophia – is. Finally when you’ve worn yourself out with sightseeing, rewind with a steam bath or massage at a traditional Turkish hammam.
This half-day trip will introduce you to the history of Famagusta. You’ll get the chance to view the abandoned ‘ghost town’ of Varosha, which remains sealed off from the Turkish invasion of 1974. Along the way, your guide will tell you all the facts and tales of the historic port city – once the setting for Shakespeare’s Othello. After a visit to Saint Nicholas Cathedral, you’ll have some free time to wander around the old town, with its Venetian walls, Gothic churches, palm trees and upturned boats. There are plenty of arty shops too, so it’s great for picking up souvenirs. Once you’ve finished exploring, you’ll head to Constantia Beach, where you can take a midday dip overlooking the derelict hotels and homes of Varosha.
No one loves treasure as much as a bunch of swashbuckling pirates – that is, apart from kids. So dust off your eye patch and dig out your map for this good ol’ fashioned treasure hunt. You’ll join a modern-day gold rush as you head to the sleepy village of Dherynia on the hunt for missing pieces of the puzzle. It’s not just fun – it’s educational too, as you’ll learn about the traditional Cypriot way of life at the village’s folklore museum. The museum is actually set inside a charming old house, full of carvery, pottery and farm utensils. And as you wander the streets for clues, make sure to keep an eye out for any local strawberries on sale – they’re the best around. Once you’ve finished the treasure hunt, we’ll drop you back to your hotel for you to count your newly-acquired fortune.
Everyone knows the feeling – sometimes when you’re on holiday you just want to sit back with a nice, chilled beer. Today, you’ll get the chance to taste three different beers, plus tour a family-run microbrewery. Don’t worry – we’ll drive so you can taste the results of years of brewing at the country’s first microbrewery, Prime. After you’ve been shown around and initiated into the traditional art of brewing, you can find out what all the fuss is about. There’s a lot on offer from pale ale and golden ale to their signature black and white beers.
Leave your best gear in your suitcase for this day out – it’s dusty and dirty, but it’s a great way to experience the Cyprus countryside. You’ll sit down in the seat of a quad bike, and go on an off-road adventure to some of the lesser-explored areas of the island. There’ll be opportunities for photos along the way – the route makes stops at places like the hilltop Ayios Epifanios Chapel, and a viewpoint overlooking the picturesque Konnos Bay. You’ll also break out at Cape Greco, a cliffy headland that pokes out into the Mediterranean Sea, and is fabled to be the home of the legendary Ayia Napa sea monster. Later, there’ll be some time to cool off with a dip in the waters around the famous caves that are punched into the area’s coastline.
You’d be forgiven for thinking Jack Sparrow and the Pirates of the Caribbean had made a wrong turn and landed in Cyprus after spending the day on the Black Pearl. It’s one of the Mediterranean’s biggest replica pirate ships, and everything about the day is inspired by the Disney classic. The crew even have their very own Captain Jack leading proceedings. Once you’re onboard, his men will set sail towards some of the best snorkelling spots and sea caves along the island’s east coast. In between anchor-downs, there’ll be a treasure hunt for little ones, before the pirates put on a swashbuckling show. A freshly-grilled lunch will be served onboard, too. The ship is equipped with a fully-stocked bar, so bring some cash if you want to have a drink in the sun.
Like the old saying goes, ‘a bad day fishing is always better than a good day at work’. Today, you’ll find out exactly why. You’ll meet up with a local fisherman, who’ll take you out in his boat to his favourite cast-off points and teach you his techniques of scoring the catch of the day. You’ll have a go at trolling, where the motion of a moving boat pulls the bait through the water. Plus, you’ll try your hand at angling with a simple hook, line and net. In terms of what you can hope to catch, tuna, barracuda, and mackerel all thrive in the waters off Cyprus’ eastern shores.
