Chauen is a known as the “blue” city, is in northwest Morocco situated in the Rif Mountains, located inland from Tangier and Tetouan. The city was founded in 1471 by Moorish exiles from Spain. Its blue-glazed houses and buildings are a tradition that comes from the town's former Jewish population.Chefchaouen was known as one of the main concentrations of Moriscos and Jews who sought refuge in this mountainous city after the Spanish Reconquista.
After pick-up, we’ll drive to Rif Mountains where the guide will give details on the history. Then we’ll do a refreshment stop at Ain Lahcen Cafe Restaurant or similar (1 mineral water or 1 soft drink) before continuing with our city tour to Chaouen (sightseeing + photos), El Makhzan Square (photos-stop + explanations), Ras El Ma spring (visit + explanations + photos). We’ll have lunch at Casa Hassan restaurant or similar (3 courses lunch + mineral water or soft drink). The we’ll visit Uta El Hamam Square (photos-stop + explanations) and the Medina and souks (sightseeing + photos).
Tetouan was of particular importance in the Islamic period, from the 8th century onwards, since it served as the main point of contact between Morocco and Andalusia. After the Reconquest, the town was rebuilt by Andalusian refugees who had been expelled by the Spanish. This is well illustrated by its art and architecture, which reveal clear Andalusian influence. Although one of the smallest of the Moroccan medinas, Tétouan is unquestionably the most complete and it has been largely untouched by subsequent outside influences. This excursion starts with a drive to the “Hercules Grottos” (natural caves with prehistoric remains). After a while, we reach the “Cap Spartel” extreme north promontory of the African continent. Then we return to Tangier through the residential district of California with its famous people mansion houses then through the main avenues of the new town to the sandy beach resort of Malabata with its seaside hotels, restaurants and sidewalk cafés.
We end the excursion by visiting the Handicraft centre of Tangier with a large display of local handicraft, and then we return to the hotel.
Via Tangier Bay and the city main avenues, lined by magnificent buildings, you head towards the Kasbah and Medina districts where Henri Matisse; regarded as one of the most important French painters of the 20th century spent most of his time and like many other famous artists who lived in Tangier, Matisse loved the old town and its colourful markets.
We will follow the path of Matisse and explore the fascinating city of Tangiers on foot, strolling down the mysterious winding streets, stopping at numerous street gates, corners, and sites that Matisse liked to paint. We will visit the souks boarded with shops, stopping to admire the beautiful handicrafts and barter for that essential souvenir, passing by the fruits, vegetables and flowers market where colours, perfumes and flavours revive our senses.
We will end our tour by an invitation to Savour a mint tea ceremony and refreshment in the terrace of one of the nicest homes in Tangier.
