As incredible as his work is, it must have been back-breaking – a fact you’ll understand all the better after you learn what it takes to create a fresco.

After getting our fill of the Sistine Chapel we’ll exit by a special access door which leads us straight into St. Peter’s Basilica and past another long line. See the incredible altar and marvel at Michelangelo’s beautiful sculpture, La Pietà before heading outside to see St. Peter’s Square.

Via Tor de Conti 25

Experience the immensity of ancient Rome’s most iconic symbol on this Express Colosseum tour with privileged direct access to the Arena Floor through the recently opened ‘Gladiator’s Entrance’, without the lines, crowding and long security checks that characterize the other entrances! What’s more, this VIP tour starts with an unforgettable buffet breakfast at one of Rome’s finest hotels with breathtaking views over the Forum from its world-famous terrace.

Start your day, and your appointment with the Colosseum, right with a buffet breakfast at a premier Rome hotel whose terrace is acclaimed throughout the city as having one of the best views of the Forum. Watch as its columns and capitals bask in the morning light, while choosing from a selection of bacon, sausages, made to order eggs, fruit, jam, pastries, yogurt, coffee and juice with dedicated service. When the weather is good, you will even be able to enjoy the morning feast in the even more spectacular setting of the hotel’s uncovered terrace reserved for your group alone. After breakfast enjoy a relaxing stroll taking in the Forum from the street with your guide’s commentary before reaching the Colosseum’s recently opened ‘Gladiator’s Entrance’.

Take in the glory and majesty of Rome at the height of its power as you walk on the very same stones as those who came to fight here in gladiatorial combat, treading in their footsteps out onto a partial reconstruction of the arena floor, looking up at the tiered ruins that were once filled with some 50,000-80,000 bloodthirsty spectators.

You are sure to hear their echoes as your eyes are drawn upward, your body turns and your mind is boggled by the elegance and engineering prowess of what was once the largest structure of its kind in the world, all from this unique 360° view, as a local expert guide reminds you of its dramatic purpose in a narrative that goes beyond anything Hollywood could dream up.

Home to the gladiatorial games, exotic staged hunts, theatrical executions and even mock sea-battles, this 1.5-hour Colosseum tour explores the Arena Floor with its awe-inspiring perspective, up-close views of the underground area where the spectacle was brought to life, and the panorama from where the Emperor’s box once stood, all special access areas that standard ticket holders don’t get to see.

In addition, you will follow your guide up to the second level to see what the crowds saw, tracing the Colosseum’s circumference in an effort to understand what it must have been like when the stands were packed, the crowds were roaring and a gladiator’s destiny hung on their whims.

No other itinerary allows you to see the Colosseum from the two most impressive above and below viewpoints in such a compact time frame. After the tour you will also have the option of following your guide for Skip the Line access to the Roman Forum. Here you will be taken to the best vantage point for a short introduction into its history and most famous monuments before visiting them on your own, enriched by your guide’s expert knowledge. You will also be able to hike to the top of the Palatine Hill for an exceptional bird’s-eye perspective over the Forum and Circus Maximus.

The Colosseum has fascinated visitors throughout history, evoking images of fierce gladiators, roaring crowds, as well as wild lions and tigers springing from their cages. For the first time you can now access this awe-inspiring edifice's Arena Floor directly for a truly indelible imprint of the wonder that was ancient Rome.

Intersection of Viale Vaticano and Via Tunisi

Have the Vatican to yourself on this exclusive, one of a kind early morning tour that whisks you through closed doors for a buffet breakfast in the peaceful Pinecone Courtyard – before anyone else enters the Museums! While the general public waits in line outside, you’ll feast on an Italian-American buffet of pastries, meats, cheeses, hot food and even pancakes, flipped by our pancake chef. Dining in the beautiful Pinecone Courtyard, alongside one of the Vatican Museums’ most beautiful works of modern art, you’ll experience a level of tranquility rarely (if ever) seen by visitors to the Vatican. This is the Vatican Palaces as they were made to be seen – without the crowds.

After breakfast you’ll follow your tour guide on an exploration of the Vatican Museums. Only just opened to other tour groups at this stage (and still closed to the public) the Museums will still be quieter than they are throughout the rest of the day – and with only 20 people maximum per group, you’ll have the time and space to really appreciate the artworks.

On your guided tour your expert, English-speaking guide will show you all the best of the Vatican collection. You’ll see ancient (and inaccurate!) cartography in the Gallery of the Maps, visual illusions in the Gallery of the Tapestries and even spot Rocky Balboa hidden among the characters of the The Raphael Rooms. Raphael’s frescoes are said by many to rival the beauty of the Sistine Chapel. Of course we won’t forget that highlight, as we visit Michelangelo’s world-famous ‘Last Judgment’ and ‘The Creation of Adam’ in the Sistine Chapel.

With Skip the Line Access you won’t have to wait around before the next leg of our Vatican adventure. Your guide will lead you through a separate entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica where they’ll give a guided tour of Michelangelo’s Pieta and the incredible carved altar among other incredible works in this, the world’s largest historic Basilica.

This tour represents the first time in history that the Vatican Museums have allowed members of the public to enter so early – not to mention providing a buffet breakfast – and City Wonders Tours is the only tour operator to offer it. Add to this early Museums access, guaranteed small group sizes and a dedicated tour guide and you have easily the most relaxing way to see the Vatican Museums. Go on, spoil yourself.

Become one of the first people ever to explore the Roman Catacombs after normal closing hours when you descend in the Catacombs of Santa Priscilla at night to learn the history of Roman burial rites and early Christianity.

Your tour starts in the Capuchin Crypt, better known as the “Bone Chapel”, because it is festooned with the mortal remains of some 4,000 deceased monks. As you take it all in with your small group of 15 people or less, your expert guide will explain the monks’ interesting beliefs on life and death which have motivated the creation of such a macabre memorial.

Afterwards, you’ll hop on a private, air-conditioned minibus and head to the Catacombs of Santa Priscilla. These particular catacombs are famous because they hold the oldest known depiction of the Virgin Mary and were once the final resting place of seven Popes.

The bodies might be gone, but that doesn’t mean you won’t feel a thrill of excitement as you become one of the first people to descend into the Catacombs after dark since the era of Imperial Rome. Because you’ll be there after closing time, you’ll have the gloomy passageways to yourself and you won’t have any trouble hearing your guide as they tell you the dark stories of the birth of Christianity.

After your Catacombs visit your private transport will drop you back to the point where you met in central Rome, convenient for the metro and restaurants.

St. Peter’s Basilica is the most important church in Christendom and this is the most complete tour of the Basilica available. From the heights of the immense dome to the depths of the Papal Crypt and all the fantastic art in between, you’ll explore every corner of this amazing church and come away in even more awe of its grandeur than when you started.

Your tour starts early, before the crowds arrive. After exploring St Peter’s Square and seeing the Swiss Guard, you’ll head for St. Peter’s Basilica dome. You and your intimate group of 15 people or fewer will take the special elevator to the first terrace of the Dome to admire the beautiful mosaics up close as your guide points out details you might otherwise miss.

To reach the top of the dome you have to climb 231 steps (there’s no elevator) but the view alone is worth the effort. In fact, it’s the single best view of Rome, stretching from St Peter’s Square across the Tiber and beyond.

When you come down from the dome your expert guide will lead you on a full tour of the Basilica, from Bernini’s colossal baldachin to Michelangelo’s heart-wrenching Pietà. You’ll also discover the small details, stories, history and lore that are packed into every nook and cranny of this nearly 400-year-old building, including why everyone is so intent on rubbing the foot of a certain statue.

Finally your tour will include a rare visit to the Papal Crypt, where your guide will point out the most significant tombs. It’s forbidden to speak inside the Crypt (it’s a sacred site) but before you enter, your guide will tell you the stories of the men buried in them.
