Ephesus is the best-preserved Roman city in the Mediterranean region, and Turkey's top sight after Istanbul, but the Ephesus archaeological site is not the only reason to visit this region. Ephesus; Ancient Greek city of Asia Minor, near the mouth of the Menderes River, in what is today West Turkey, South of Smyrna (now Izmir). One of the greatest of the Ionian cities, it became the leading seaport of the region. Its wealth was proverbial. The Greek city was near an old center of worship of a native nature goddess, who was equated with the Greek Artemis, and c.550 B.C. a large temple was built. To this Croesus, who captured the city, contributed.
Step ashore to Kusadasi from your cruise ship and step back in time with a visit to the ancient city of Priene, Miletus and Didyma. Priene was an ancient Greek city located just to the north of Miletus in western Turkey. In classical times, it was a holy city and the home of an important temple of Athena.
Priene's ruins include several columns of the Temple of Athena, much of the city wall, a well-preserved theatre and a council chamber. The ruins are next to the modern town of Güllübahce. Priene was discovered by the inhabitants on the Ionian coast. The Ionians first arrived and settled here in the 11th century BC and the city was founded either by Aegyptus of Athens, Philotas of Thebes or Amazon queens.
Miletus was an ancient Greek city on the western coast of Anatolia, near the mouth of the Maeander River in ancient Caria. Its ruins are located near the modern town of Balat in Aydin Province, Turkey. Before the Persian invasion in the middle of the 6th century BC, Miletus was considered the greatest and wealthiest of Greek cities.
The gigantic Temple of Apollo at Didyma was among the most famous oracles in the ancient world, equal in importance to the oracular temple at Delphi in Greece. Today, the temple's magnificent ruins still attract thousands of visitors - Didyma is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Turkey. The modern name of the town is Didim.
Step ashore to Kusadasi from your cruise ship and step back in time with a visit to ancient Ephesus, in particular the Basilica of St John, the Temple of Artemis and the Isabey Mosque. The Basilica of St John was constructed by Justinian I in the 6th century. It stands over the believed burial site of John the Apostle. It was modeled after the now lost Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.
The Temple of Artemis, also popularly known as the Temple of Diana, was a Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was located in Ephesus and was completely rebuilt three times before its eventual destruction either during or after the third century AD. Only foundations and sculptural fragments of the latest of the temples at the site remain. The first sanctuary predated the Ionic migration and dates to the Bronze Age. Callimachus, in his Hymn to Artemis, attributed it to the Amazons. In the 7th century BC, the old temple was destroyed by a flood. Its reconstruction began around 550BC, under the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes, at the expense of Croesus of Lydia: the project took 10 years to complete, only to be destroyed in an act of arson by Herostratus. The 14th century ?sabey Mosque is one of the oldest and most impressive remaining examples of Anatolian beylik architecture. The mosque is situated in the Ayaslu? Hills at Selçuk.

Ephesus is one of Turkey's must-sees. Set in hills above the coast, it's one of the world's best-preserved Roman cities. So visiting it is akin to being hurtled back in time 2,000 years. And on this day trip, you'll get to see all its main treasures. Admire the Celsus Library and its neighbouring twin gateways. Gaze at the chariot grooves and graffiti still etched into the paving stones of Marble Street. And check out Hadrian's Temple and the Great Theatre. This acoustically perfect amphitheatre is where St. Paul preached and it's still used for performances today. Afterwards, you'll call at a ceramics shop for a pottery-making demonstration and the chance to buy souvenirs before stopping for lunch in nearby Selcuk. Then it's on to the House of the Virgin Mary. Legend says that Mary settled in Ephesus around 37 AD, spending her last years in a house here. It's now long gone, but a chapel marks the spot. Finally, you'll visit Selcuk's Ephesus Museum to see some of artifacts unearthed at the site. Cue statues, frescoes and even medical instruments from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.
