Visit the Malay Quarter (also known as the Bo-Kaap, which means ""Above Cape"" because of its location up against the slopes of Table Mountain), where we share its history with the arrival of the Dutch in 1652. Drive through District Six, sharing its history where 60,000 people were uprooted when Apartheid became a law.
The tour continues to Langa, the oldest black township, where we’ll learn about the history of Langa and how people have improved their homes ever since they were offered ownership compared to what it used to look like during the years of Apartheid. Tour continues to “shanty town Khayelitsha”, the largest black township in Cape Town. Here we visit the Philani Empowerment Centre, where locals are taught basic life skills (weaving / arts & crafts, etc.); we visit to a shack to experience the living conditions; and we drive through middle-class Khayelitsha to experience some of the recent achievements, such as new housing developments, shopping malls, hospitals, a swimming pool and a magistrate’s court, under the leadership of Nelson Mandela.
Ditch the cableway and explore the world-renowned Table Mountain by foot – this is a very popular activity in Cape Town! There are a number of fantastic hiking routes to the summit of Table Mountain that require moderate fitness and offer an extraordinary nature experience right in the heart of the city. We will hike up Table Mountain either via Platteklip Gorge or Skeleton Gorge through the spectacular Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Once we’ve arrived at the top, the opportunities for taking stunning pictures and getting endless incredible views of Cape Town and surrounds will be astounding! But wherever you are – top or bottom – the views, nature experience and beautiful, rich fynbos are impressive. There may be times when you forget that the city is really not so far away.

This picturesque circular tour takes you from Cape Town to the seaside town of Hermanus. The road makes its way through Sir Lowry’s Pass, a scenic mountain pass that crosses the Hottentots-Holland Range. At the start of the pass you can look back for a panoramic view at the low-lying area that stretches out towards Cape Town. Nestled between mountains and sea, the town of Hermanus is not only very beautiful but offers some of the best land-based whale watching opportunities in the world (August-November). Close sightings of the Southern Right whale are likely, as they come into the bay seeking sanctuary in the cold winter months. You will be taken on a panoramic drive along Rotary Way and will explore the heart and centre of Hermanus. On the drive back, we follow the coastline, which presents further possibilities of whale (and even dolphin) sightings. A stop is made at Stony Point near Betty’s Bay to see the penguin colony (optional, for own account & time permitting). It also holds one of only two land-based penguin colonies in South Africa. Continue to the Good Company Farmers’ Market at the Company’s Garden (South Africa’s oldest garden created in 1652 to grow vegetables). The tour departs from the Tourism Information Centre in Cape Town, we do a short city walk and make our way to the Kimberley Hotel (official departure point in the old days to the mining fields) before we depart to Rawsonville on our bus where we meet the Le Roux family for a spot of wine tasting at their boutique estate.
We board the train at Worcestor and travel by train between Worcestor and Matjiesfontein. One road leads in and out of Matjiesfontein, and on it sit a coffee shop, a museum (which our passports gained us free entry into after dinner on our odd night stroll), an out-of-service two-pump Shell Petrol Station, the Laird’s Arms pub and the Rietfontein Nature Reserve, our evening lodging.
We join John the entertainer for a bizarre bus tour of the town, some honkey tonk in the pub followed by dinner catered for at our lodging. Then, go back in the hotel.
On Saturday after breakfast we visit the famous graveyard before heading to Montagu in our bus where we meet with a local meat merchant to experience a behind the scenes look at Biltong production. We wander through the local goods market before we continue to Ashton for a local lunch and an interesting tastings experience.
Our last stop is at a local Olive farm where we will meet the owner and taste their various products. We make our way back on our bus to Cape Town where we end the tour at the Cape Town Tourism Offices.
