According to the legend, Hum was built with the stones left over when giants were building towns in the river Mirna valley. Despite such a small number of residents, barely 20 inhabitants, it preserved the old ritual “election of the prefect for a year” where all the men from the parish gather at the Municipal Loggia to elect the village superior by carving their votes into a wooden stick. Inside the preserved city walls there are two small streets with three rows of houses. Today, Hum is a city-monument, one of the rare examples of the urban development within the city walls.
It was first mentioned in documents dating from 1102, at which time it was called Cholm which is derived from the Italian name Colmo. A bell and watch tower was built in 1552 as part of the town's defenses beside the town loggia. The present Parish Church of St. Jerome with its classical facade was built in 1802 on the side of an earlier church which was built by the local master Juraj Gržiniè.
The Hum Glagolitic wall writings are preserved in the church, written in the formative period of Glagolitic (the second half of the 12th century) and they are one of the oldest examples of Croatian Glagolitic literary culture in the Middle Ages.
Apart from being famous for being the smallest city in the world, recently it became popular for a brandy, called “biska”, spiced with mistletoe and made according to the old recipe originating from Hum.
The history of the Stud farm and lipizzan horses is closely intertwined with the Habsburgs who ruled as many as 650 years over an extensive part of baroque Europe. Horses, the Spanish horse was considered an ideal breed, were at the time a crucial strategic advantage and were thus of outstanding importance to the Habsburgs.
The soil and climate of the Karst are very similar to that of Spain which is why the Archduke Charles chose to build the royal stud farm in 1578 in the Karst in the abandoned summer residence of the Bishop of Trieste in this area.
On 19 May 1580 he signed an agreement to restore the estate. Lipica is the oldest European stud farm continuously breeding one of the oldest cultural horse breeds. As such it has a remarkable significance as a cultural, historical and natural heritage for Slovenia and Europe.Trieste is the most international city in the region, suspended between a glorious past of ""Little Vienna on the Sea"" and the present cosmopolitan city. From the Audace pier to the old Lanterna, there is a succession of sails, antique shop window displays, shops and beautiful buildings: in the distance, one can glimpse the white profile of Miramare, the romantic castle of Maximilian and Charlotte of Hapsburg. A journey of discovery of the city's history, literature and art, from the Roman era to medieval wonders, to the Habsburg splendour. The wealth of architectural styles in the palaces in Trieste is remarkable:Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, Eclectic and Baroque, coexisting in a harmonious blend with Roman remains, eighteenth century buildings and Hapsburg style buildings. Taking a coffee break in one of the historical cafes of Trieste is a real ritual that is absolutely not to be missed and whose appeal has spread even through word of mouth.
Risnjak is a mountain in the Risnjak National Park, in Gorski Kotar, Croatia. It belongs to the Dinaric Alps mountain range. The name of the massif probably comes from ris, the Croatian word for lynx. Another interpretation suggests that it comes from the local word risje, which is a name for a type of grass.
The vegetation is very diverse. Thirty different plant communities have been recorded, of which the most common are beech and fir forests which go up to 1240 m and then are replaced by sub-alpine beeches. The highest vegetation is a belt of mountain pine. The fauna is also diverse, but has been less well researched. There are particularly many species of birds and mammals, including several types of chamois, while since 1974 the area has once again been inhabited by the ris.
The highest peak of Risnjak mountain is Risnjak or Veliki Risnjak at 1528 m (the latter name means Big Risnjak), and it is also the highest peak in the Risnjak National Park, and the second in Gorski kotar next to . On its southern slope is located the mountain lodge called Šloserov dom, built by. The peak can be reached only on foot, from Crni Lug (3 h) or from an unpaved road beginning in Gornje Jelenje (1 h).
The highest peaks of Risnjak mountain are: Veliki Risnjak (1528 m), Snježnik (1506 m),Sjeverni Mali Risnjak (1434 m) and Južni Mali Risnjak (1448 m )
Buzet is situated in the very north of Istria near the border with Slovenia. Its historic core, dating from the Middle Ages lies on a hilltop above a fertile valley of the longest Istrian river – the Mirna.Today, Buzet is widely known as the 'City of Truffles' since the forests along the Mirna River are especially rich in this divine tuber. According to some views, the white truffle of Istria is as good as the most famous white truffle from the Italian region of Alba. In honour of this truffle, each year Truffle Days are organized in September and October.Cicarija is the large area covered with meadows and woods that stretches northwest of Buzet.
Wood from this area was used to make oars in Venice. The harsh climate renders agriculture impossible, so life in this part of Istria has always been connected with sheep-farming. The inhabitants of Cicarija known as Cici were known for the production of coal which was then sold in all parts of Istria, even Trieste and Rijeka. The present-day villages of C icarija are mostly very peaceful and almost completely abandoned, perfect for rest and relaxation.Today Lanišce is both the center of Cicarija and the Community of Lanišce with a population of about 400. The village nestles on a slope below Mount Orljak (1106 m) and is dominated by the church of St. Cantian dating from 1927.
If you are looking to experience one of the most beautiful panoramas in this part of Europe, then you simply must visit Uèka Mountain and climb up to its highest peak, Vojak (1401 m) and its stone tower-viewing point.
On a clear day, you can see Istria, Kvarner and the central Dalmatian islands, Gorski Kotar, the peaks of the Italian Alps and Venice… You can reach Vojak in only a few hours along the numerous hiking trails leading upwards from the towns of the Liburnia Riviera, and considering that the trails lead you through lovely and botanically valuable beech forests, you will find refreshing shade here in even the hot summer months.
Of special note is the endemic Uèka bellflower, which grows nowhere else in the world but on Uèka Mountain. Mammals in the park include deer, roe-deer, wild boar, badger, marten and field mouse, while bear are found in the northern sections of the park. Almost one hundred species of birds have been recorded in the park, the most attractive being the Griffon vulture, a virtually extinct bird of prey in Europe which still happily lands on the cliffs of Uèka Mountain. In addition to the geomorphologic nature monument Vela Draga, well known for its limestone columns tens of meters in height, there are almost 200 caves within the boundaries of Uèka Nature Park. Many are home to valuable cave fauna, and many are the sites of paleontology or archaeology finds. The torrential waterfalls of Uèka which flow in periods of heavy rain are particularly interesting to see, and together with the numerous springs and pools make up the hydrological picture of Uèka, valuable not only in the biological but also in the economic sense.
However, that which will most delight visitors to the park in search of an active outing in nature are the numerous possibilities for recreation, from light hiking to demanding free climbing, mountaineering or spelunking. If we add to that the many mountain biking trails and the hang gliding and parasailing sites, then the invitation to visit Uèka Nature Park will be all the more enticing.
We will transfer you to Poklon, saddle between two hills from where trail starts. It goes on the top of Ucka Mountain which is biggest mountain in Istria with altitude of 1401m. From the top it goes all the way down on sea level in Lovran. Path is covered by oak and chestnut forests that give pleasant freshness in hot summers. The very summit of Ucka (Vojak) is worth to climb on for stunning panorama.
The panorama of Kvarner bay includes sea and coastal towns, as well as the mountains in background: Obruc, Snjeznik and Risnjak Western side the whole Istra peninsula lies in front of you. Sometimes, if visibility is good, view towards to Venice and on Alps on the north side.
