Información

According to the legend, Hum was built with the stones left over when giants were building towns in the river Mirna valley. Despite such a small number of residents, barely 20 inhabitants, it preserved the old ritual “election of the prefect for a year” where all the men from the parish gather at the Municipal Loggia to elect the village superior by carving their votes into a wooden stick. Inside the preserved city walls there are two small streets with three rows of houses. Today, Hum is a city-monument, one of the rare examples of the urban development within the city walls.

It was first mentioned in documents dating from 1102, at which time it was called Cholm which is derived from the Italian name Colmo. A bell and watch tower was built in 1552 as part of the town's defenses beside the town loggia. The present Parish Church of St. Jerome with its classical facade was built in 1802 on the side of an earlier church which was built by the local master Juraj Gržiniè.

The Hum Glagolitic wall writings are preserved in the church, written in the formative period of Glagolitic (the second half of the 12th century) and they are one of the oldest examples of Croatian Glagolitic literary culture in the Middle Ages.

Apart from being famous for being the smallest city in the world, recently it became popular for a brandy, called “biska”, spiced with mistletoe and made according to the old recipe originating from Hum.
