Tickets en Costa Pacífico Norte / Guanacaste

This half-day trip is a walk on the wild side, where you’ll come face-to-face with monkeys, deer, insects and perhaps even an ocelot – or dwarf leopard – in Santa Rosa National Park. You’ll start out with a visit to La Casona monument, where a small Costa Rican army won the final fight against the Filibusters trying to invade. Today, there’s a museum on the same site, to help remember the men who risked their lives fighting for Costa Rica’s freedom. After learning about the history, you’ll hike in the park, which happens to be Central America’s largest remaining area of tropical dry forest. There are plenty of different trails for hikers, depending on what you’d like to see, but the white-tailed deer trail is a great way to spot one of the country’s national symbols.

You’ll feel just like Tarzan as you spend the day swinging through the jungle, splashing around in waterfalls and scrambling up rocks. This full-day trip takes you to Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin, a working horse and cattle ranch right at the foot of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano. You’ll zip line, abseil, climb and leap your way around the rugged canyon, only slowing to tackle the hanging bridges. With your feet safely back on the ground, you’ll jump on a horse for a ride through the tropical forest, heading to the Black River rapids. Here, the adrenaline will really kick in, as you spin and bounce your way down the river in your individual raft. You’ll finish the day with some lunch and relaxation time in the natural thermal pools of the steaming volcano above.

You’ll feel like part of an old Western, as you ride up through the Guanacaste mountains and plains. Look out and you can take in panoramic views of the Pacific coastline and the impressive Rincon de la Vieja volcano. And the next part of the tour will take you even higher, up into the treetops. You’ll be guided through the forest canopy, zipping across canyons, and crossing waterfalls. If you’re in need of a cool-down, you can take a dip in one of the waterfall’s crystal-clear pools. Then, it’s lunch in the resort’s restaurant with a mix of local and international cuisine to suit even the fussiest diner. It’s all about relaxation in the afternoon, as you finish your tour with a soak in the hotel’s geothermal hot springs, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Costa Rican jungle.

You’ll get a real flavour for Nicaragua on this tour, as you cross the border from Costa Rica. The first stop is the city of Granada, where your guide will show you around. Founded in 1524, it’s one of the oldest settlements in Central America and has a history as colourful as the buildings that line its streets. After lunch, the next stop is the National Park of Masaya, the largest in Nicaragua and home to two dormant volcanoes. If you dare, peek over the edge of the Masayan Volcano’s crater into the smoke brewing from its core. The final stop of the day is the Catarina Market, where you can buy one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted souvenirs. En route, the coach will stop at a viewpoint for the massive Apoyo’s Lagoon, which was formed by a violent volcanic eruption thousands of years ago.

The Skywalk is made up of a mile and a half of bridges and walkways, which hang high in the trees of the Monteverde rainforest. Up here, wildlife thrives in the increased sun exposure – in fact, 90% of the rainforest’s life is found in the canopy. Your guide will help you to spot spider monkeys, sloths and the multi-coloured Quetzal birds, among the many other tree-dwelling animals. Back on the ground, there are also butterfly and hummingbird gardens, which are home to 20 varieties of each species. In the afternoon, you’ll learn all about the coffee that has been fuelling the Costa Rican economy – as well as caffeine lovers around the world – for over 300 years.

Rio Perdido translates as the ‘lost river’, but you won’t be getting lost with this aerial adventure over the river canyon. You’ll take on a Tarzan swing, a 90-foot challenge bridge and five zip lines, with a top height of 800 feet. Then, you can lie back as you tube down the river. You won’t be alone as brightly-coloured birds and monkeys look on from the forest. Keep an eye out for the hot water spouts along the rock walls, too. After lunch, it’s time for another dip, but this time in the warm mineral-rich waters of the thermal river. The thermo-mineral gorge is the centrepiece of this 600-acre reserve – drawing its energy from the deep magma flow. You’ll also head south to the hot river pool where you can slather each other in vitamin-enriched volcanic mud.

Experienced hikers will be at home on this visit to the Rincón de la Vieja national park, with its steep slopes covered by rich tropical forest. The main attraction here is unsurprisingly the conical Rincón de la Vieja volcano. Technically, it’s classed as active but it hasn’t erupted since the 1980s. There are several other volcanoes here, too, the highest of which is Santa Maria at 1,916 metres tall. This volcanic cluster has left a trail of hot springs, steaming vents and boiling mud pools. And as it’s in such a remote location, there’s lots of wildlife you wouldn’t see elsewhere, including monkeys, sloths and birds like toucans and eagles. In terms of plant life, the park has more of Costa Rica’s national flower – the increasingly rare purple orchid – than anywhere else in the country.
