Dating back 500 years, this legendary city and archaeological site, also listed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO was the centre of the Trojan War as described by Homer in his epic poem, the Iliad. Founded by the Hittites in the 3rd millennium BC, the city declined as Constantinople flourished, to eventually disappear under layers of soil until it was re-discovered by archaeologists in the 19th century. Excavation works are still in progress and this tour visits the Megaron Houses, a small Roman theatre, the bouleuterion, city walls, small museum and of course the reconstructed Trojan horse. In addition, we visit the Cimenlik Castle built by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1462, it now serves as a military museum.

The drive to Troy takes a little less than 4 hours and passes spectacular scenery, running the length of the Dardanelles and by-passing Canakkale.

A trip to the battlefields of the First World War in northwest Turkey where the Turks fought the combined forces of the Allies on the north bank of the Dardanelles Straits. The 1915 landings and battles are commemorated by Australians and New Zealanders on ANZAC Day, 25 April, every year. At this time especially, Gallipoli becomes a place of pilgrimage for many Australians and New Zealanders who want to honour the memory of their forbears. The Turkish victory over the Allies is celebrated on the 18th March.

With an early start, the drive lasts approximately 4 hours and makes the short crossing across the Dardanelles from Canakkale to the Gallipoli peninsula by ferry. Here the tour visits the famous battle fields of Gallipoli, Anzac Cove and the war cemeteries (including Beach Cemetery, Quinn's Post, and the Nek).

Military museum: Exhibition of soldiers’ photographs, uniforms, weapons and other findings from the battlefields.

Lone Pine: With its’ sweeping view over the Aegean and down the Gallipoli peninsula, this is where the Turks and Anzacs fought and died.

Anzac memorials: Including Lone Pine - Australian memorial, Chunuk Bair - New Zealand memorial, Hellespont - English memorial of the naval battle fought on 18th March 1915. Johnston's Jolly Cemetery: Named after the commander of the 2nd Australian Division Artillery, Brigadier-General George Johnston. Australian troops reached here on 25 April 1915 and their field guns were said to ‘jolly-up’ the Turkish battery opposite. It was lost the next day to the Turkish forces and never regained.

Driving through much of western Turkey, known as the Aegean after the Aegean Sea which borders the western coast, this full day tour takes us to Pamukkale or Cotton Castle, a natural phenomenon where hot calcium spring water has run down the hillside for centuries leaving deposits of carbonate minerals which have formed these natural travertines and terraces. These hot springs have been used as a spa since the 2nd century BC. A fantastic photographic opportunity, walking on top of the travertines is no longer permitted as a conservation measure.

At the top of the travertines is the ancient city of Hierapolis, dating from the Hellenistic and Roman eras. Here one can see the magnificently preserved and vast Necropolis of the ancient Hellenistic world, Roman basilica baths, Domitian Gate, Roman fountains, the Grand amphitheatre, as well as other monuments at the site. The Antique Pool where Cleopatra is said to have bathed is fed by the same spring waters as the travertines which are said to have many natural healing properties. Swimming over ancient columns and ruins in warm, bubbly water is an experience not to be missed so swimwear and towels are recommended (entrance fee not included in the tour).

A full day exploring the amazing city of ancient Ephesus where St Paul is said to have lived for three years and St John is believed to have settled with Mary, mother of Jesus, followed by an afternoon visit to a quaint hilltop village, once inhabited by Greeks and popular for its’ locally produced wine.

The journey to Ephesus takes the tour through much of western Turkey, by-passing the Aegean city of Izmir (ancient Smyrna). On arrival, this city of which approximately one third has been excavated so far, will amaze with its majestic buildings and column-lined main street. Created capital of Asia Minor in 27BC by Augustus, the population was approximately 250,000 growing to 400,000 in 100AD. During the tour we will see the remains of Roman buildings such as the Odeon, Fountain of Apollo, the magnificent amphitheatre and perhaps most spectacular of all, the beautiful Library of Celsus before visiting the shrine known as the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem ana), located on Mt Nightingale.

After lunch, there is time to explore the pretty village of Sirince, where women sell local agricultural produce such as olives and fruit as well as hand-crafted linens. Its’ elevated position affords spectacular views over vineyards, olive groves and the Aegean Sea in the distance.
