Immerse yourself in the natural riches of the land of fire and ice with this breathtaking day trip that takes in whale watching in Faxafloi Bay and a tour of the Volcano House. This excursion is available in two formats, depending on the time of year: whale watching followed by the Volcano House or the tour of house followed by the whale watching expedition.
The whale watching and Volcano House format runs from April 1 to September 30. You start the tour with whale watching cruise departing at 9am from Reykjavik's old harbour. After admiring the wonders of the world’s largest mammal and seeing the seabirds of Faxafloi Bay, return to the harbour by midday. From there, it’s a short stroll towards the Volcano House to enjoy a light lunch. At 2pm, view two documentaries about the eruptions on Heimaey in 1973 and that of Eyjafjallajokull in 2010, whose ash clouds caused so much disruption. Before and after the viewing you can also enjoy a hands-on-experience in the exhibit room and learn about Iceland's geological history.
The Volcano House and whale watching tour is available all year round. Begin with a visit to the Volcano House at 10am to view two documentaries and to peruse the exhibition. A light lunch is served in the café at about 11.30am and after that you take a short stroll towards the old harbour to board the whale watching expedition at 1pm and sail into Faxafloi Bay to explore its many wonders.
