HIGHLIGHTS:
* Look out over the enchanting Trasimeno Lake at Passignano sul Trasimeno
* Explore Perugia’s architectural gems
* Be led around Assisi by an expert guide
* End the tour at the beautiful St Francis’ Basilica
Crossing Tuscany, the first town we meet is Passignano sul Trasimeno, a small medieval hamlet enclosed by city walls and a beautiful fortress. Take in the magical viewpoint over the enchanting lake and islands, and then continue through evocative landscapes to the hill where the ancient city of Perugia rises before us.
Stand in the middle of the beautiful square and admire the architectural gems around you: the Palazzo dei Priori, the Cathedral and the elegant Fontana Maggiore dating back to 1275. We then continue on to the beautiful places where the patron saint of Italy, Saint Francis of Assisi, lived, worked and died. At the foot of Mount Subasio, visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli before breaking for lunch.
Once we reach Assisi, an expert guide will lead you around the civil and religious artistic heritage of the city: the Gothic Basilica dedicated to Saint Chiara, the Renaissance Chiesa Nuova with its elegant dome, and the Roman temple of Minerva. Discover the 14th century Monte Frumentario and the beautiful St Francis’ Basilica, a UNESCO heritage monument, built with white-rosy stone from Mount Subasio. The wonderful frescoed cycles by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Lorenzetti are preserved inside the Basilica, and take us to a place of serenity and joy to finish the tour.
