Route: Brasov - Transfagarasan road – Poienari - Brasov (depending of the season: Transfagarasan road is open between July 1 - October 31).
The trip starts with a visit to Poienari Fortress, the real Vlad Tepes's Main Residence Castle, followed by a drive on Transfagarasan highway, built as a strategic military route, Transfagarasan Highway is the second-highest paved road (2042m) in Romania and considered by some to be the most dramatic. It runs North to South across the highest sections of the Carpathian Mountains. The road connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia.
Drive for about 2 hours from Brasov to Balea Lake, which is a natural glacier lake at 2040m altitude, 360 meters long, 240 meters wide and 11 meters deep; one of the most beautiful glacier lakes of Romania.
Stop to Balea waterfall, with its 60 meters height - one of the most impressive waterfalls in central Europe, followed by about 1 hour to Balea Lake, while taking a short walk tour in the area.
The trip is continued on the other side of the mountain passing to Vidraru dam. Next sit to visit is Poienari Castle, a climb of about 1450 steps. The trip ends with a drive back to Brasov (about 2 hours drive).
