Nestled amongst a charming river valley is a hidden treasure. Trier is Germany’s oldest city and a fascinating day trip from Frankfurt.

On the banks of the Moselle river lies Trier. Once a province capital during Roman times, it is laden with historic monuments that boast Unesco World Heritage status.

You are greeted into Trier by the best preserved Roman town gate north of the Alps. Known as the “Porta Nigra” for its blackened stone, it was built around 180 AD and stands proud to this day. Marvel at the huge Basilica of Constantine built at the beginning of the 4th century and be impressed by the Imperial Baths and the Roman Amphitheatre with a capacity for 20,000 spectators, site of gladiatorial games.

You can also visit the Church of our Lady, the oldest Gothic church in Germany, or Cathedral of St Peter with its most precious relic: the Holy Robe, the tunic of Christ. The Electoral Palace directly next to the Basilica is also considered one of the most beautiful rococo palaces in the world. With so many fascinating monuments and architecture, Trier is a step back in time. At the end of the tour you have some free time to take a stroll along the banks of the Moselle before returning to Frankfurt.
