Reach “stazione San Pietro” (St.Peter’s Station) and start one hour journey through the Roman countryside to Castel Gandolfo. Occupying a height on the Alban Hills overlooking Lake Albano, Castel Gandolfo is famous to host the 17th-century Papal Palace. It has served for centuries as a summer residence and vacation retreat for the Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church.
Although situated within Castel Gandolfo, the residence is afforded extraterritorial status as one of the properties of the Holy See and is not under the jurisdiction of Castel Gandolfo or Italy. Once at the Apostolic Palace you will be provided with audio guide and start your visit. Then enjoy the rest of the day at leisure and in the afternoon take the train back to Rome.
