Situated at the top of the hill, not only does the Abbey (founded in 529BC) offer spectacular views over the city of Cassino but it is world renowned as a centre for art, culture and holiness. The Abbey is steeped in history having been destroyed and constructed again four times over, most recently in 1944 during the Second World War, all of which you will learn and more during your own tour.
After learning about the role the Abbey played in the war and witnessing the results for yourself, the tour moves on to the beautifully maintained Commonwealth Cemetery where many of the soldiers who died at the battle of Monte Cassino are buried. There is an opportunity for a lunch break before the final stop of the day, a visit to the World War II Museum where those of all nationality are commemorated.
