Enjoy a unique interaction and experience the cultural diversity of the Cape Malay community, descendants of the original Malay slaves. The Malay Quarter is also known as the Bo-Kaap, meaning “Above Cape”, so called for being positioned up against the slopes of Table Mountain. In the early 18th century, a multitude of slaves from Java, Ceylon and other Far Eastern regions were brought to Cape Town. After slavery was eliminated, their descendants, known as the Cape Malays, settled here. The Bo-Kaap became an exclusive residential area for Cape Muslims during the Apartheid years, and is one of the city’s oldest areas. It occupies an enviable position in the City Bowl on the lower slopes of Signal Hill. This picturesque neighbourhood is filled with steep, cobbled streets and multi-coloured houses.
The tour starts outside the Bo-Kaap Museum in the heart of the Cape Malay Quarter. Your story-telling host will guide you on an entertaining Bo-Kaap walking tour, giving you insights into the historical and architectural landscape that adds so much colour and character to Cape Town’s City Bowl. You’ll visit a friendly spice shop and discover the aromatic ingredients of local dishes. The highlight of this experience is enjoying an authentic Cape Malay style three-course home-cooked dinner, with a traditional welcome drink, at the home of your gracious host family, who will enjoy sharing with you information about what the Cape Malay Cultural Experience is, their way of life, and more about the food you’ll enjoy at their home. You will be able to gain some insight into your host and her family, and also about life in Cape Town and the Bo-Kaap community.
