Start at the idyllic Bom Retiro nature track, on a clearly marked out path. Its 2800 meters long, 700 meters high and rough incline of 14%. Look around and embrace the jungle around you, look out for the wild monkeys and exotic species of birds. The path is mainly shaded by the big canopies and trees, following the hillsides. The entire hike itself is 2800 meters long and take about 1 and a half hours to complete.
Next, you’ll start making your way up to the bottom of the enormous stone staircase. You’ll feel like an extra for an Indiana Jones movie! Climb the steps for the most rewarding view of the entire city, including Downtown, North Zone, South Zone, Ilha do Governador and even Niteroi, the next city along. It is believed that these ancient steps were originally built for the Belgian King Albert, who visited Rio in 1920.
Now at the top of these steps, you have made it to the top of Pico da Tijuca, towering over the city at 1021 meters high! Take your time to admire the 360 degree views, enjoy being on top of the world and more importantly, and feel proud of yourself for the journey you have just overcome. You are now a true adventurer and have created unique memories, incomparable to any other hike.
