Join us on a day trip from Rome to an idyllic island paradise, one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. At just 7.5 square miles, Ponza is a tiny, remote volcanic island located 20 nautical miles offshore. Largely unknown outside of Italy, Ponza Island has managed to retain its unspoiled character as a Mediterranean island of fisherman and mariners: the native ‘Ponzesi’ who have been living here for generations.
Our day trip begins with a fast and easy air conditioned transfer from our office in central Rome to our departure port, just an hour away. Here we’ll have free time to enjoy a quick breakfast before catching the fast ferry to Ponza Island. The comfortable ferry ride is just an hour and a half long.
Upon arrival in Ponza, you’ll have about 30 minute of free time to explore the promenade along the colorful port where you’ll be able to shop or purchase fresh fruit from the locals and soak up the island atmosphere.
Around lunchtime our Captain will freshly prepare a simple ‘Mariner’s style’ pasta in the boats tiny kitchen, which we’ll enjoy on board with water and white wine.
Throughout the day your Captain will regale you with tales of the island’s history and the numerous legends and stories these rocky shores have inspired. Historians say that the island served as inspiration for Homer’s “the Odyssey” – and many of the island’s coves and grottoes have names inspired by the epic poem.
Your Tour Leader will be with you throughout the day, taking care of all of the logistics so you needn’t worry about ferry schedules or where to go.
Your 5 hour boat trip ends at 4:00PM in Ponza’s port. You’ll have some free time to shop or grab a glass of prosecco while enjoying the views before we catch the fast ferry back to the mainland at 5:00PM where our transfer will be watching for us.
We’ll arrive back in our central Rome office around 7:30PM-8:00PM where your Tour Leader will be happy to help you find the fastest way back to your hotel or recommend a local restaurant for dinner.
