Información

Historically known as Adrianople or Edrene, is a city in the northwestern Turkey, in the region of East Thrace, close to Turkey's borders with Greece and Bulgaria. Edirne served as the second capital city of the Ottoman Empire from 1363 to 1453, before Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) became the empire's third and final capital.

Having so much in common with Istanbul and Bursa, Edirne has a special place in Ottoman and Turkish history. Edirne was a kind of transitional form, between traditional and modern Ottoman Empire having the most complicated buildings and traditional life at the same time as the Ottoman capital.

Bayezid Külliye(Complex), Selimiye Mosque (UNESCO's World Heritage List), Eski(Old) Mosque, Üç Serefeli (3 Minarets) and Ali Pasa Çarsisi (Bazaar) are the most important historical places in Edirne. Selimiye Mosque was described as his masterpiece by famous Ottoman architect "Sinan" himself.

Beside its historical places Edirne offers delicious and tasty foods, too. Traditional foods-especially Ciger(fried liver)-, pastry and unique desserts... You can find a new taste of Ottoman/Turkish cuisine which you will definitely love.

You can also see the place "Kirkpinar (Fourty Springs)" where Traditional Oil Wrestling Competition is being held for 655 years (2015). Here you will have an idea about sports history and famous "Pehlivans (Wrestlers)".

The name Kirkpinar-Fourty Springs comes from the rivers and springs around place. Three main rivers, Meric, Tunca and Arda across each other in Edirne. There are many other rivers and creeks around Edirne. Inevitably, there are bridges when rivers are around. Tas Köprü, Tunca Köprüsü, Gazimihal Köprüsü and Bayezid Köprüsü are the main bridges which connect main roads of the city. There are also many old bridges around the city. Tas Köprü is the primary one to be visited!
