Out first stop is the ancient San Giovanni Cathedral, which is not only the oldest church in the West but also the oldest of the four Papal Major Basilicas. Within this extraordinary construction you can find moving and mysterious relics from the time of Jesus, including the stairs that Jesus ascended in Jerusalem during His Passion to reach the praetorium of Pontius Pilate, and also pieces of the very cross on which the Christian Messiah was crucified.
