Don’t let Madeira’s small size fool you: the island is brimming with natural parks and scenery that stays long in the mind. Visit the emerald green Peaks of Madeira and experience the tangible contrast between east and west.
We leave Funchal behind us and travel to the village of Camacha, stopping at Abrigo do Pastor where you can sample a drink local to the area, climbing up to Pico do Ariero. The second highest peak on the island at 1810m high (and the highest accessible by vehicle), panoramic views over the volcanic mountains unfold before you.
From here we head down to Poiso with time for lunch, ready for some exciting off-road driving through the leafy forest of Laurisilva to the Ribeiro Frio Natural Park. Enjoy a short and easy walk to the impressive Balcões viewpoint, before continuing to Faial and Santana – famous for its A-framed cottages reminiscent of times gone by. We drive through the incredible scenery that puts Madeira on the map, passing Porto da Cruz and Machico from where the island was discovered centuries ago, on our return to Funchal.
Meeting/pick-up point: Pick up from hotels in Santa Cruz, Caniço and Funchal between 8am and 8:45am. Should your hotel be located at any other area on the Island, pick up points and times are by arrangement only.
