National Art Museum of Ukraine was founded in 1899. Collection of the National Art Museum of Ukraine is the most extensive and complete collection of the native Ukrainian art in the world. There are masterpieces of Ukrainian painting, sculpture and graphics created in the period of fifteen centuries - from the times of Kievan Rus until the nowadays. The works of all masters related to Ukraine can be found in the museum collection. There are beautiful pieces of decorative and pictorial art, icons and old parsuna style portraits, works of T. Shevchenko, N. Pimonenko, G. Narbut, A. Murashko, V. Krichevsky and many others.
In the museum there is one of the best collections of icons in Ukraine. The gem of the collection is the 12th century polychromic wooden relief called "St. George with scenes from his life". There you can see the combination of Byzantine and Romanesque motifs. There are beautiful 14th - 16th centuries icons from Western Ukraine in the collection too.
Russian Art Museum
There is the largest collection of Russian paintings, drawings and sculptures in Ukraine. The museum collection is based on the private collections of Kiev patrons of arts. The members of Tereshchenko family (they were well known Ukrainian sugar kings) were the most known patrons of arts in Kiev. There are many paintings of famous Russian artists P. Fedotov, I. Shishkin, I. Kramskoy, N. Yaroshenko, I. Repin, V. Vasnetsov, V. Polenov, M. Vrubel, V. Vereshchagin that were donated to the museum by Tereschenko family. Later some paintings by A. Arkhipov, A. Rylov, N. Roerich, K. Somov were donated too.
