See with your own eyes the location in Um Qais where Jesus is believed to have turned a load of demons into a heard of swine during the Biblical exorcism of the Gerasene demoniac and then visit the ten Greco-Roman cities that made up the legendary Decapolis.
Perched on a splendid hilltop overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee, Um Qais boasts impressive ancient remains such as the stunning black basalt theatre, the basilica and adjacent courtyard strewn with nicely carved black sarcophagi, the colonnaded main street and a side street lined with shops, an underground mausoleum, two baths, a nymphaeum, a city gate and the faint outlines of what was a massive hippodrome. It was in Um Qais that Jesus drove demons out of man they had possessed and turned them into a heard of swine, which then ran into the sea. Proceed to Pella. Pella is exceptionally rich in antiquities, some of which are exceedingly old. Besides the excavated ruins from the Greco-Roman period, Pella offers visitors the opportunity to see the remains of Chalcolithic settlement from the 4th millennium BC, evidence of Bronze and Iron Age walled cities, Byzantine churches, early Islamic residential quarters and a small medieval mosque.
