This experience will give you plenty of food for thought, literally. You’ll spend your trip in a place known as Europe’s Vegetable Garden. This area of greenhouse farms spreads out for more than 64,000 acres, and supplies more than half of Europe’s demand for fresh fruit and vegetables. You’ll begin with a visit to a few of the greenhouses themselves. They’re known as parrals because they’re simple structures and naturally ventilated. Inside, you’ll see how fruit and vegetables are grown. Then you’ll get to give the produce the acid test. Sample an alphabet’s worth of tomato varieties, including pear, cherry and cocktail. Then try Almeria’s answer to the cucumber sandwich – the region’s own-brand cucumber on top of a hulk of locally-produced bread. You’ll also have the opportunity to try jams and marmalades made from the fruits.
