Visiting three major ancient cities dating back more than 2,000 years, this tour is an opportunity to journey back in time to the days when Alexander the Great visited the magnificent Temple of Apollo at Didyma to listen to the advice of its' famous oracle before going into battle.
Departing from Kusadasi, the tour begins with a visit to a nearby market in the town of Soke. Locals bring farm produce from surrounding villages and there are bargain clothes and fake branded goods to snap up. After an hour’s free time, the next stop is the wonderful hilltop site of Priene; once an active port and renowned for its system of geometric city planning introduced in the 4th century BC by Hippodamos of Miletos. The next stop is Miletos, a city which produced several philosophers and sages and though many of the original buildings are ruined, the theatre and Baths of Faustina are worth seeing.
The final ancient city on the tour is Didyma, approximately 30 minutes’ drive away. This site has just one single monument, but this is a marvellous and impressive temple to the god Apollo and once one of the most sacred places in antiquity. Following this there is an hour or so free time at the popular resort of Altinkum, 5 minutes’ drive away, which has a great beach and shallow sea water so swimwear and towels are recommended.
