The air in Ithaca is thick with myth and legend. This tiny island, 4 kilometres from Kefalonia, is thought to be the birthplace of Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s Iliad. On this trip, you’ll visit the island’s capital, Vathi. This town is shaped like an amphitheatre around one of the world’s largest natural harbours. Vathi has had its fair share of celebrity visitors and Steven Spielberg has anchored his boat in the harbour on more than one occasion. From Vathi, you’ll hop on a boat and sail north to the village of Kioni. From the sea, you’ll see how the island’s countryside is characterised by olive groves and thread-fine goat tracks rather than roads. By the time you reach Kioni it will be lunch time and you’ll sit down to eat in a traditional taverna. You can expect to find all the Ionian classics on the menu here, including onion and spinach pies and fresh fish. You’ll take the road back to Vathi, stopping at the 16th-century village of Stavros on the way.
