On this trip, you’ll enjoy a night with a community of Mayans in their forest settlement. You’ll start the evening by visiting a typical Mayan hut, where you’ll be greeted by some of the townsfolk and introduced to their ancient customs. The women of the community will also spend time showing you how they make tortillas from scratch. Afterwards, a traditional healer called a shaman will take you through an ancestral purification ritual, which takes place in a temazcal – a type of stone-built sauna. Then, you’ll walk through the forest to a cenote, or sinkhole, for a refreshing after-dark dip in the crystalline waters. After towelling down, you’ll be served a traditional Mayan dinner including chicken cooked with achiote, a local seed that gives a smokey, barbecue-like flavour.
