This whistle-stop tour is perfect if you want to tick off southern Tunisia’s main sights in one day. First up, you’ll make your way to the hilltop village of Tamazret, one of the first places in central Tunisia to feature overground rather than underground dwellings. Dotted with simple mudbrick houses, its streets wind upwards to a whitewashed mosque gazing over the desert plains. Afterwards, you’ll head for Douz, which is known as the gateway to the Sahara. The attractive town is home to Tunisia’s biggest oasis, where over half a million date palms merge into a stretch of golden dunes. Take the opportunity to don traditional Bedouin robes and enjoy a camel ride, swaying over the rolling sands. Then, stop for lunch at a hotel before visiting the troglodyte village at Matmata. As soon as you see its ancient cave dwellings, you’ll understand why it landed a role as Luke Skywalker’s home in Star Wars – they look like they’ve dropped from an alien planet. Tiptoe through the tiny, cool caves – some of which are still inhabited – before your journey back to Djerba.
