Información

Toshogu Shrine is the dedicated place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868. Initially built in 1617, during the Edo period, while Ieyasu's son Hidetada was shogun, it was enlarged during the time of the third shogun, Iemitsu. Ieyasu is enshrined there, where his remains are also entombed. This shrine is built by Tokugawa retainer Todo Takatora.

During the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate carried out stately processions from Edo to the Nikko Tosho-gu along the Nikko Kaido. The shrine's annual spring and autumn festivals reenact these occasions, and are known as processions of a thousand warriors. Edo Wonderland hosts a wide variety of Edo period architecture from rural lodgings to urban samurai residences and government buildings.

Edo Wonderland is populated by staff in Edo period attire, reenacting the speech and behaviour of Edo era citizens from lower, middle and upper classes. Edo Wonderland has seven theatres featuring various traditionally themed shows including plays, Ninja action and Oiran shows combined with outdoor live shows, street performances, parades, seasonal festivals and special events. Edo Wonderland also has a range of visitor experiences for adults and children including Ninja workshops, Japanese traditional archery and shuriken throwing.
