You’ll tick off a trio of ancient cities on this tour – Letoon, Xanthos and Patara. UNESCO-listed Letoon and Xanthos are next-door neighbours – Xanthos was the big city, while Letoon was known as a sacred centre dedicated to Leto and her children, Apollo and Artemis. There’s plenty to see in both places, from Byzantine basilicas and amphitheatres to tombs and acropolises. Letoon is particularly scenic, as a big chunk of the ruins are half-submerged in water, surrounded by reeds and terrapins. After a lunch stop in the charming seaside town of Kalkan, we’ll press on to Patara. What was once a wealthy trading city is now half-buried by sand, but you’ll be able to see the city’s old parliament building, lighthouse and amphitheatre. The ruins are right next to Patara’s 12-kilometre-long beach – you’ll have an hour or so to spend on the sand, before heading back to Fethiye.
