Nestled between two mountain ranges, capital city San José is full of life. Four million people live here, making it the most populated place in the country. The National Theatre is among the city landmarks. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the lavish interior makes it well worth a visit. Your next stop is the Pre-Colombian Gold Museum, which houses an impressive collection of gold dating back as far as 500 AD. After an overnight stay, the tour will take you to the Poas Volcano. This huge crater, a mile in diameter, is filled with liquid sulphur that bubbles and smokes. The last big eruption was over 100 years ago, but nearby geysers can be seen to explode 820 feet into the air. On the slopes of the volcano, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens are home to five falls, plus the world’s largest butterfly observatory. Next on the agenda is the town of Sarchí. Here, much of the town is decorated with kaleidoscopic designs. And it’s a great place to sift through stacks of artisan handicrafts.
