Jump on a trike and travel past rice fields along, meet farmer and fishermen, visit caves, swim in a river and learn how to make soap… join us for a day immersed in traditional Philippine life. You’ll be met by your English-speaking guide at Cagban Jetty Port and travel to Caticlan, from where you’ll travel through the rough Barangay Road to Malay Poblacion. See the City Hall and traditional community centre. Take a walk through the caves to see bats, stalactites and stalagmites. The caves are surprisingly spacious and easy to explore with many open chambers. Afterwards, meet a fisherman as he demonstrates the traditional and modern fishing methods they use, the perfect opportunity to try some fresh grilled fish.
Then meet a rice farmer to learn about the rice cycles and processes. Try suman, a rice and coconut cake cooked in banana leaf. The next stop is the Nabaoy River, where lunch is served in a traditional ‘nipa’ tree hut on the banks. Enjoy true Malaynon cuisine made from ingredients grown on the river banks. Try the fresh water shrimp, the gabi root, chicken dishes and the fern salad.
After lunch, there is time to take a siesta or swim in the river. Head back to the trike for the short journey to the Motag. Along the way see coconut oil production and coconut drying. Visit a ladies’ cooperative to learn the art of making soap from entirely natural ingredients. There’s also a chance to get hands on and make a woven palm leaf bag, a material known locally as banig.
Meeting point: Budget Mart, D'Mall at 10am. Tour lasts between five and six hours. Please present your voucher to the local guide at the beginning of the trip.
