Explore Kuching with a walking tour that starts at the Kuching waterfront. This tour offers you the opportunity to take closer look at Kuching’s history and cultural heritage. Stops include the below places: The ornately decorated Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple (believed to date back to 1843), is said to have the best Feng Shui location in the city. Walk across to the Chinese Historical Museum, this old court house traces the history of the Chinese community and their involvement in modern, multi-racial Sarawak.

Proceed Carpenter Street which is located parallel to the Main Bazaar, it has a selection of small antique and handicraft traders, coffee shops, as well as food stalls and two small Chinese temples. The General Post Office is a good example of Kuching’s cosmopolitan architectural mix, it appears to belong to the early 19th century with its neo-classical style and Corinthian columns. The site was once used for a police station and also the Rajah’s Stables.

Explore India Street that is lined with shops selling all kinds of goods, particularly textiles. Follow a narrow passageway that will leads you to Gambier Street where you will find a small Indian Mosque. Gambier Street is named after a type of shrub, gambir which was Sarawak’s main export in 1894. The plant’s leaves produce an extract that is used to dye and tan leather.

Visit Brooke Dockyard and the Sarawak State Mosque. Walk past the Merdeka Square to get to the St Thomas’ Cathedral before ending the tour at the Sarawak Museum. Note: Visitors to mosques are requested to dress respectfully and to remove their shoes. Non-Muslims may not enter during prayer times.
