Early departure from your hotel in Chiang Rai for a drive to Doi Mae Salong. Visit an Akha and a Yao village along the way. Continue to Therd Thai, formerly known as Ban Hin Taek. Therd Thai is largely inhabited by Shan (Thai Yai). We will visit a Shan Buddhist temple where your guide will explain about the Shan culture and religion.
We will also visit the former headquarters of notorious drug baron Khun Sa, who commanded the Shan United Army and the Mong Tai army. Thai military forces attacked the area in 1982 and drove Khun Sa and his army into Burmese territory. We will continue to the village Mae Moh along a mountainous road with incredible views. Numerous Akha villages are located along the road. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way.
After a short ride start walking in the Chinese Haw village Phaya Phrai. Pass a small Red Lahu village and a military outpost on the Thai-Burmese border. We will hike through an extensive tea plantation and visit the Chuifong tea factory, stopping for a taste of their delicious Ulong tea. Continue to the Akha village Laoma. Return to Chiang Rai where you will arrive in the late afternoon.
