This is a perfect tour for archeologist lovers. You will visit the ruins of Wiang Kum Kam and the ancient cities of Lamphun and Wiang Takan and learn about their story of glory and downfall.
The tour starts with a drive to the ruins of Wiang Kum Kam, just outside Chiang Mai. Here you will get on a horse cart and visit the most interesting structures of this ‘underground’ city. Wiang Kum Kam was founded in 1248 by King Mengrai, the ruler of Chiang Rai. The location chosen, next to the Ping River was not a good one. The city was prone to flooding and was abandoned about 300 years ago. In the mid-eighties the ruins of the city were rediscovered and The Fine Arts Department started cleaning and restoring the ruins.
From Wiang Kum Kam we drive to Lamphun. We avoid the busy roads and take a beautiful and very scenic route along the Ping River, the river that wreaked havoc on Wiang Kum Kam. In Lamphun we drive along the old city walls, visit Wat Haripunchai, and have lunch at one of our favorite ‘khao soi’ restaurants, a short walk from the temple.
We continue to Wiang Takan, another lost city of Lanna. At Wiang Takan we are usually the only visitors in this wonderful place. We follow the old moat of the city. Finally, we drive back to Chiang Mai.
