This trip will take you to a part of Spain that looks like it could have been designed by Tolkien. You’ll drive past the shark fin-shaped peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to a town in the foothills, called Guadix. Houses here are not your usual two-up two-down. When you arrive, you’ll notice chimneys sprouting from the hills and mysterious whitewashed doorways leading into the mountainsides. These are the homes of the troglodytes or cave dwellers. It’s thought around 10,000 locals live underground in Guadix. It’s a tradition that started in the 8th century, but these days, most of the cave homes have mod-cons. A trip to Guadix also puts you right in the middle of Costa de Almeria’s wine-making region, so you’ll get to taste some of the local tipple during your tour. There will also be time to visit the village of Alhabia. Blink and you’ll miss the traces of tourism in this village. Locals here still live very traditional lives. You’ll get a feel for this when you watch a pottery making demonstration.
