The Arenal Volcano is visible for miles around, but a visit to Costa Rica isn’t complete without seeing it up close. It stands at a massive 5,437 feet, and its base is blanketed by rich rainforest. You’ll get a glimpse of this dense jungle first thing, as we take a short trek through it. The volcano has been the country’s most active for the last 40 years. It’s currently in its resting phase, though, so you’re unlikely to see any lava today. Next on the agenda is the town of La Fortuna, literally translated as ‘lucky’. In 1968, Arenal erupted, burying three neighbouring villages, and it was the survivors of the disaster who established this town. In the afternoon, we’ll go to one of the natural hot springs dotted within the park. These warm, tropical pools would have you believe they’re artificially heated. But all the warmth is provided naturally by the volcanic lava brewing underground.
