In this walking tour you will have a chance to discover a different Athens: You will join the Athenians in their everyday life – where food IS king – and you will experience a tasty slice of true Modern Greek culture and delicious eating habits.
Our culinary journey will take us to carefully selected specialty food stores, where we will taste some of the finest olive oil, cheese and honey available and local delicacies such as ‘pastourma’ cured meat. We will stroll through traditional, authentic neighborhoods in the heart of Athens and visit some wonderful pastry shops serving favorite Greek sweets. We will be immersed in the colors and smells of local spices, the secret behind many of the most renowned dishes of Greek cuisine, and aromatic Greek coffee (which you may have heard of as ‘Turkish’!).
The irresistible smell of freshly baked delicacies will lead our steps into one of the oldest traditional bakeries of the city. Our journey will continue through the bustling alleys of Varvakios, the picturesque fish, meat and vegetable market -the true "belly of Athens". And, last but not least, we will make a stop at a local joint for an authentic taste of the celebrated Greek souvlaki!
Meeting/pick-up point: Your meeting point is the Entrance of Archea Agora (Ancient Agora) on Adrianou Street, Thissio. You can get there easily by metro, getting off at Monastiraki Metro Station (green or blue line) or Thissio Metro station (green line). Careful not to confuse it with the Roman Agora. When you get off either station you should should look for Adrianou Street, it’s very nearby. On one side you will see St. Phillips Church and the café DIODOS (?????S) and on the other side the entrance of Archea Agora. Your guide will meet you right in front of the entrance.
