Discover the rural and urban charms of the Costa Blanca with this delightful half-day tour taking in the scenic Algar Waterfalls and the historic coastal town of Altea. The excursion will also allow you to enjoy the picturesque landscapes of inland Alicante, an area of great natural beauty that is surprisingly little known by outsiders.
The Algar Waterfalls are part of a protected wetland centred on the River Algar, which flows into the sea at Altea. Though name means ‘cave’ in Arab, what characterises the waterfalls is the verdant landscapes created by the confluence of rock pools, narrow channels and thundering cascades. There’s a scenic 1.5km-long walkway that crosses the River Algar and looks out over the falls too. Along the route, see spectacular torrents and springs that burst from the rock. And if you’ve brought your swimming gear, you can take the plunge and enjoy bathing in the crystal clear waters – be warned, they can be chilly! There are also an old dam and a century-old canal in the area.
Continue to the pretty coastal town of Altea, which is dominated by the blue dome of the hilltop Our Lady of Solace Church. The area around the church is a maze of winding, cobbled alleys of whitewashed houses. One of the most romantic features of these streets is that often boast scenic glimpses of the sea. There has been settlement in the area since Iberian times, centuries before the Christian era, and it was known to the ancient Greeks.
